The annual APS StampShow was held at the Sacramento Convention
Center. StampShow is the nation's largest annual stamp
event. There were 150
dealer booths, three first day ceremonies, several postal
administrations, a cachet-makers' bourse, about 13,000 pages of
exhibits, society meetings, and society booths, including one for the
United States Stamp Society.
The USSS booth was staffed the entire four days of the show; many
members met at the booth and several new members signed on. Even a
couple of former members stopped by to say "Hello." Society
publications were on display and for sale; the most popular item was the
new U.S. Booklets and Booklet Panes. All in all, it was a great
success.
Several USSS members presented seminars, and quite a few USSS members
showed exhibits. The winner of the USSS Statue of Freedom Medal was
Hideo Yokota for his exhibit "U.S. Airmail Special Delivery Issues of
1934-1936." Besides the open exhibits, there was a literature
competition and the Champion of Champions competition. The APS Luff
awardees were Diane Boehret, Kurt Kimmel and John Hotchner.
In addition to the cachetmakers' bourse and the first day ceremonies,
Chris Calle, who has designed more than 200 postage stamps for countries
including the United States, Sweden, the United Nations, and the
Marshall Islands, designed a special cover for this show to mark the
35th anniversary of the first man on the moon.
The USSS booth was a popular place to meet other members, sit and chat,
and in general, take the load off one's feet. Many who stopped by were
from California and other locales on the West Coast, but others were
from as far away as Massachusetts, Maryland and Florida. Photos from
the Society Booth appear on the following page. Those visiting and/or
